On the 8th December we held the first Attleborough Academy Sixth Form & Staff Giant Bookswap. The aim of this event was to promote reading: to extend everyone’s access to texts across a large range of genre and topic; to role model prolific readers and to promote discussion about books and reading by sharing responses and recommending texts. In the weeks leading up to the event Sixth Form students and staff donated nearly 400 books both fiction and non-fiction, hardback and paperback: from classic novels, historical novels, modern literature, through to children’s classics, history, crime and fantasy – in return they were given book swap tokens ready to use to ‘purchase’ books at the book swap event.
On the day itself, a number of Sixth Formers worked with Assistant Principal, Mrs McConnell to organise the donated books into categories and to lay out the stock in the Sixth Form Centre. When doors opened later in the day the room was buzzing with our staff and Sixth Formers swapping ideas about books in the process of spending their tokens. The piles of books quickly found new homes with readers to appreciate them. All in, all a very successful occasion and both students and staff requested a repeat event in 2018!
