Year 12 A-Level Lecture Trip

Ten of Attleborough Academy’s science sixth formers (accompanied by Mr Seymour, Mrs Edwards and Dr Elias) went on a visit to UEA to go to a lecture on antibiotics in animals and nature, by Professor Matt Hutchings. This lecture was a fascinating insight into zoology, genetics, biology, chemistry and medicine. It not only covered how antibiotics were discovered but also problems of antibiotic resistance and how new antibiotics are being researched from various sources including from bacteria that live on leaf-cutter ants to bacteria that live in the deserts. In addition, genetics to engineer bacteria with new CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing technology to make new antibiotics was discussed.  Students gave feedback that this lecture was interesting and a good insight into what life as a university student will look like in terms of being in a lecture.
